LYF is one of the top 5 Indian mobile brands which was established in 2015 by the telecom operator, Jio. Marketed closely along Jio’s 4G services, smartphones under the brand were slated to launch in November 2015. In January 2016, it launched its first set of 4G-enabled smartphones named after the four elements: Earth, Flame (Fire), Water, and Wind.


In May 2016, international market tracker Counterpoint Research reported that LYF had become the fifth largest smartphone producer in the Indian market, capturing 7% share in the January–March quarter of the financial year 2015-16. It was the second largest LTE phone supplier after Samsung, surpassing Micromax and Lenovo during the quarter.

In first quarter of its inception, Lyf instantly climbed to become one of the top five smartphone brands in India in terms of shipment volumes. Reliance Digital had shipped around 1.7 million LYF branded smartphones in the first quarter of 2016.

Lava was founded in 2009 by Hari Om Rai, Sunil Bhalla, Shailendra Nath Rai and Vinit Jangir.

The company was founded in 2009 as an offshoot of a telecommunication venture. It is headquartered in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India and has overseas operations in Thailand, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Mexico and the Middle East, Pakistan and Russia.

It later entered the mobile handset business. By 2010, Micromax was one of the largest domestic companies making handsets in the low-cost feature phone segment in India.As of Q3 2014, Micromax is the tenth largest smartphone vendor in the world.

The company is facing stiff competition from Chinese companies that are penetrating the Indian market. The company owns YU Televentures, which sells the products under the brand name YU.
